Valentine’s Day… Some History and Fun Facts.

Valentine’s Day comes from a very old tradition. It is believed to have been started from a Roman festival Lupercalia “Lupercalia was a very ancient, possibly pre-Roman pastoral festival, observed on February 13 through 15, to avert evil spirits and purify the city, releasing health and fertility.” Lupercalia which is celebrated in the middle of February, was officially the start of their springtime.

It is thought that as part of the celebration, boys drew names of girls from a box. Then they would be boyfriend and girlfriend during the festival and sometimes they would even get married.

In time, the church wanted to turn this festival into a Christian celebration and decided to use it to remember St Valentine, a widely recognized third-century Roman saint.

Eventually, St Valentine’s name began to be used by the people to express their feelings to those they loved.

For many couples, Valentine’s Day brings with it a whole lot of expectation. It’s become like money has to be spent on lavish presents, flowers and meals out. But it doesn’t really have to be that way. There are a lot of simple, easy (and creative) ideas for a unique personal gift for your loved one this Valentine’s Day. My personal favorite, the Crème Brule loose leaf tea from “Victory Tea Company” or for that matter any one of the many herbal teas that they offer. Also follow my blog and I will share other creative ideas I think are outside the traditional box of Valentine gifts.

Some of the many unfamiliar facts surrounding Valentine’s Day include…more than 62 percent of Americans celebrate Valentine’s Day and spend almost 20 billion dollars on the holiday.

It has been said that up to 6 million couples get engaged on Valentine’s Day.

Also some of the many facts include that men spend almost twice as much as women for Valentines Day.

There are more than 1 billion cards sent for the holiday.

Research shows that the most popular Valentines gifts are candy and flowers with jewelry being the next most given gift. Once again, I submit that some of the really fine loose leaf teas from “Victory Tea Company” would make a really thoughtful as well as flavorful Valentine’s Day gift for your sweetheart.

Another fun fact is that more than nine million pet owners are expected to buy gifts for their pets this Valentine’s Day.

More than one-third of men would prefer not receiving a gift. Less than 20% of women feel the same way.

We all know how big Hallmark is on this holiday and they produced Their first valentine card in 1913.

Finally, some more research on how Americans celebrate the “Saint Valentines Holiday”

The U.S. Census Bureau has come up with these answers…

Greeting Cards 65%
Plush 21%
Date Night 44%
Other Gifts 17%
Candy 38%
Perfume/Cologne 38%
Flowers 32%
Jewelry 11%
Gift Cards 29%

I hope you have enjoyed learning these little tidbits about Valentine’s Day and keep Victory Tea Company in mind when thinking about your honey this year.
